When publisher IDW announced an Angel comic book a few years back, there was much rejoicing followed by bittersweetness.  On the one hand, a series in the vein of Buffy at Dark Horse Comics would be brilliant while on the other hand, it would be within the Buffy universe but with little to no crossover.  The two television series were like this with the rare crossover episode but this is the comics.  Flashforward to the present and both Buffy and Angel are at Dark Horse and the crossovers have commenced.  First, we have the original adorkable one, the mistress of Wiccan arts in Willow who is kicking off a new and possible world-altering story arc.

Baltimore continues to hunt the one-eyed vampire that killed his family.  In this chapter of Baltimore’s journey, he finds himself crash landing in a fishing village but of course, it is no ordinary fishing village.  The townspeople, which consists of only the elderly and children, have abandoned the creature comforts of their homes for makeshift shelters by the shore.  It soon becomes clear that their once lovely town is now a haven for things that hide in the dark.  Lord Baltimore must try to keep on the still warm trail of his prey while discovering the reason for the disappearance of the village’s men and what the remedies of Dr. Leskovar are.  Baltimore: Dr. Leskovar’s Remedy is in a three-way tie for our favorite vampire book and is currently pulling ahead of the pack.

From the changing comic book landscape (thanks to digital comics) to the groundswell of high concept, creator-owned titles, now is truly one of the most interesting time periods for comic books, both good and bad.  On the forefront of creator-owned titles is publisher Image Comics, which is experiencing a bit of a renaissance with the majority of its monthly titles.  Every month either a new book premieres or another rises to the top of our comic stack.  Saga, the sci-fi fantasy book by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, is quickly becoming the anticipated book of each and every month.  Blending elements of fantasy with sci-fi maybe nothing new to comics or storytelling but, dammit, this duo makes it look fucking effortless and sexy as hell.
