5.13-5.15.2011: What To Watch – Theater Edition

“Give vampires back their balls!”  This is the week’s (and possibly the year’s) best endorsement for a movie from Paul Bettany, the star of Priest, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  It’s release is perfect for Friday the 13th but will the action/horror/sci-fi movie be able to fight off the comedic stylings of Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph in Bridesmaids or last week’s #1 and #2, Thor and Fast Five?

Priest  Starring Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind, Legion), Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers & The Return of the King, Star Trek), Cam Gigandet (Twilight [that other vampire movie], Easy A), Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible III, Nikita), Lily Collins (The Blind Side) and Stephen Moyer (True Blood [that other vampire show]).  Directed by Scott Stewart (Legion).

Scott Stewart’s second directorial outing with Paul Bettany, the first being Legion, is Priest in 3D.  It is based on Priest, a manhwa or Korean graphic novel series from Min-Woo Hyung with screenplay by Cory Goodman.

Synopsis:  Priest, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world — one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires.  The story revolves around legendary warrior, Priest (Bettany), from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church.  When his niece (Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires in the desolate wastelands outside, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them and to seek vengeance upon those responsible, especially their brutal leader (Urban). He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, Hicks (Gigandet), a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and former warrior, Priestess (Q), a member of his former legion of vampire-killers who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.  courtesy of IMBd and http://www.beyondhollywood.com
