6.17-19.2011: What To Watch – Theater Edition

The first and only DC Comics movie of the summer, Green Lantern, is bringing the green (sorry Kermit) and the ring to save the Earth.  Will Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the first ever Green Lantern movie blow our minds this weekend?

Green Lantern  Starring Ryan Reynolds (Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Blake Lively (TV’s Gossip Girl, The Town), Peter Sarsgaard (Orphan, The Skeleton Key) and Mark Strong (The Eagle, Kick-Ass).  Screenplay by Greg Berlanti (TV’s [cancelled] No Ordinary Family), Michael Green (TV’s Heroes), Marc Guggenheim (TV’s FlashForward) and Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).  Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro).

Green Lantern is an effects-heavy film (roughly 1300 visual shots according to director Campbell) introducing the origin of the first and only human Green Lantern.  The Martin Nodell (Mart Dellon) and Bill Finger-created comic premiered July 1940 in All-American Comics #16 under All-American Publications; the company merged to become DC Comics.  Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, first thought of Green Lantern in 1997 when they asked Kevin Smith (Clerks, Red State) to write a script but he turned it down as he believed he was not a suitable candidate.  In 2004, Robert Smigel (Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Saturday Night Live) wrote a comedy-based Green Lantern script with Jack Black (King Kong, Nacho Libre) as the superhero; let’s just say fans showed no enthusiasm over the net.  Four years later, the trio of Berlanti, Green and Guggenheim completed a script with Berlanti signed to direct; he was later forced to drop out because the studio attached him to another Warner Bros. picture, This Is Where I Leave You.  The writers were influenced by the Green Lantern comics by Denny O’Neil & Neal Adams of the 1970’s, Dave Gibbons of the 1980’s and Geoff Johns of the 2000’s.  Shot in Louisiana, Warner Bros. has prepped for a sequel (possibly a trilogy) as a treatment has been written by Berlanti, Green and Guggenheim, and writer Goldenberg, who rewrote the Green Lantern script, is writing the screenplay.

Synopsis:  In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, an elite, powerful force has existed for centuries.  Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps.  Warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him the ability to create anything his mind can imagine.  But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destory the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Reynolds).  Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before.  But Hal’s humanity is one weapon no member of the Corps has ever had, and if – with willpower, determination and the encouragement of fellow test pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Lively) – Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will save the Earth and all of mankind from certain destruction.  courtesy of Warner Bros.
