8.9.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Everybody, at one time or another, has either been on a road trip or thought of going on a road trip.  For those who’ve never been, blame just about every road trip movie, where nothing goes off without a hitch from point A to point B.  This week’s DVD/Blu-ray release isn’t turning the genre on its head except for a smart ass alien along for the ride.

Paul (2011) on DVD and Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy.  Starring Simon Pegg (Star Trek), Nick Frost (Grindhouse), Jason Bateman (The Change-Up), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Bill Hader (TV’s Saturday Night Live), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar) and Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet).  Written by Nick Frost and Simon Pegg (both of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz).  Directed by Greg Mottola (Adventureland, Superbad).

The writing duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost returned to the big screen as stars of their own sci-fi comedy, Paul, with a little help from CGI.  Instead of just sitting and writing the script, the two went on a road trip, much like their characters, Graeme and Clive, to find and use ideas in the movie.  Paul, winner of best Comedy at the 2011 National Movie Awards (a British movie award show), is full of science fiction references especially of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi movies.  The $40 million movie grossed $37.412 million domestically and $58.525 million internationally, doing best overseas in the United Kingdom.  The release of the US DVD comes almost two months after the UK’s three DVD versions.

Synopsis:  For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base.  For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town – a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Frost).  Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship.  And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.
