Definition of Troll [trohl] – noun: (in Scandinavian folklore) any of a race of supernatural beings, sometimes conceived as giants and sometimes as dwarfs, inhabiting caves or subterranean dwellings.  In the case of André Øvredal’s Trollhunter, it is a giant in Norway in this week’s DVD/Blu-ray releases…

Trollhunter (2010) on DVD and Blu-ray.  Starring Otto Jespersen, Hans Morten Hansen and Tomas Alf Larsen.  Written & Directed by André Øvredal.

Trollhunter, a Norwegian mockumentary-style film, was shot in the forests and mountains of Western Norway under maximum secrecy.  Released at just one theater the second Friday in June, the adventure/comedy/fantasy brought in $5,585 during its first weekend.  Over the next eleven consecutive weeks, the movie screened at a maximum 21 theaters in one week with a high weekly gross of $67,202, earning $240,851 domestically.  Trollhunter premiered overseas in only five countries: Belgium (7/27), Croatia (6/2), France (7/27) and Turkey (5/27), doing best in its home country of Norway (10/29/10), raking in $3.906 million.  The worldwide box office totaled $4.147 million and critics enjoyed it.  Before the movie’s US debut, the movie already sparked remake interest with the American film industry.  On the day of its debut, 1492 Pictures, writer/director Chris Columbus’ (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) production company, and CJ Entertainment & Media acquired the rights to remake Trollhunter with Marc Haimes (producer to Hotel for Dogs, The Legend of Zorro, Men in Black II) set to write the script.

Synopsis:  The government says there’s nothing to worry about – it’s just a problem with bears making trouble in the mountains and forests of Norway.  But local hunters don’t believe it – and neither do a trio of college students who want to find out the truth.  Armed with a video camera, they trail a mysterious “poacher,” who wants nothing to do with them.  However, their persistence lands them straight in the path of the objects of his pursuits: trolls.  They soon find themselves documenting every move of this grizzled, unlikely hero – the trollhunter – risking their lives to uncover the secrets of creatures only thought to exist in fairy tales.
