9.6.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Four sets…three television series and one movie franchise released on DVD/Blu-ray in one week will more than fill our schedule for the week before the new fall tv season starts.  Lucky for us, there’s one more movie release at the end of the week…think X (no, not The X Factor with Simon Cowell).

Fringe: The Complete Third Season (2010-11) on DVD and Blu-ray.  Starring Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Jasika Nicole, Lance Reddick and Blair Brown.  Created by J.J. Abrams (Super 8, TV’s Lost), Alex Kurtzman (Cowboys & Aliens, TV’s Hawaii Five-0) and Roberto Orci (TV’s Transformers Prime, Star Trek).

The 6-disc DVD and 4-disc Blu-ray set of the third season of Fringe is all about one’s, two’s and three’s.  The “two show” season featured two Olivias, two universes (prime and parallel), twins Aaron (TV’s Warehouse 13) and Shawn (The Ruins) Ashmore [Episode 5 “Amber 31422”], three title color sequences to represent the episode’s predominant universe setting (blue – prime, red – parallel & gray – future) and one baby in 22 episodes.  It also won actor John Noble the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series award at the first Critics’ Choice Television Awards and a nomination for Best Drama Series (won by AMC’s Mad Men).  Both the DVD and Blu-ray includes commentaries, featurettes (the Blu-ray release includes one additional featurette), a gag reel and unaired scenes.  The fourth season of the FOX sci-fi drama begins on a new night, Friday, September 23rd at 9/8c.

Season 3 Synopsis:  The Fringe team escapes from the parallel universe – except for Olivia (Torv), trapped in the other world and replaced in ours by her double, who turns Peter (Jackson) and Olivia’s tentative relationship into a love affair.  Then Olivia returns, bonds of trust fray, ever more bizarre and terrifying phenomena occur and secrets that stretch back to 1985 threaten to destroy our universe.  Or theirs.  courtesy of Amazon

22 Episodes:  Olivia, The Box, The Plateau, Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?, Amber 31422, 6955 kHz, The Abducted, Entrada, Marionette, The Firefly, Reciprocity, Concentrate and Ask Again, Immortality, 6B, Subject 13, Os, Stowaway, Bloodline, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, 6:02 AM EST, The Last Sam Weiss, and The Day We Died.

No Ordinary Family: The Complete First Season (2010-11) on 4-disc DVD.  Starring Michael Chiklis, Julie Benz, Kay Panabaker, Jimmy Bennett, Autumn Reeser, Romany Malco, Stephen Collins and Josh Stewart.  Created by Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern) and Jon Harmon Feldman (TV’s Tru Calling).

ABC’s No Ordinary Family was part sci-fi, part superhero set in an action/comedy/drama but like most (or is it all?) shows of the sci-fi/superhero genre on the Big Three (ABC, CBS & NBC), it ended in cancellation.  Even before the season/series finale titled (ironically) ‘No Ordinary Beginning’, the 22 episode season was knocked down to 20 episodes at the end of February 2010, and in the following weeks, actors Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz signed on to pilots for Fall 2011 (Vince Uncensored and A Gifted Man [premieres Friday, September 23rd at 8/7c on CBS], respectively).  The complete first season includes only deleted scenes and a gag reel; too few bonus materials just like too few episodes of No Ordinary Family.

Show Synopsis:  The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim (Chiklis) feels disconnected from his workaholic wife, Stephanie (Benz), and two teenage children, Daphne (Panabaker) and JJ (Bennett).  To encourage family bonding time, Jim decides the family will join Stephanie on her business trip to South America.  When their plane crashes into the Amazon River, they barely enjoy a moment to celebrate their survival before returning to the grind of everyday life.  But they will soon realize that their lives have been forever changed.  Each member of the family starts to show signs of new, unique and distinct super powers.  Will their newfound abilities finally bring them together or push them further apart?  courtesy of Amazon

20 Episodes:  Pilot, No Ordinary Marriage, No Ordinary Ring, No Ordinary Vigilante, No Ordinary Quake, No Ordinary Visitors, No Ordinary No Ordinary Mobster, No Ordinary Accident, No Ordinary Anniversary, No Ordinary Sidekick, No Ordinary Friends, No Ordinary Brother, No Ordinary Detention, No Ordinary Double Standard, No Ordinary Powell, No Ordinary Proposal, No Ordinary Love, No Ordinary Animal, No Ordinary Future, and No Ordinary Beginning.

Scream Five-Film Set (1996, 1997, 2000) on Blu-ray.  Starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.  Written by Kevin Williamson (TV’s The Vampire Diaries) and Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon).  Directed by Wes Craven (Scream 4).

Don’t let the title fool you…the five-film set is a 4-disc set with only the first three Scream films in the horror franchise and two documentaries, Still Screaming and Scream: The Inside Story.  Features included are commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes and outtakes but the set is not complete without this year’s Scream 4, to be released on DVD and Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy on October 4th, 2011.

Scream Synopsis:  After a series of mysterious deaths befalls their small town, an offbeat group of friends led by Sidney Prescott (Campbell) become the target of a masked killer.

Scream 2 Synopsis:  Away at college, Sidney Prescott (Campbell) thought she’d finally put the shocking murders that shattered her life behind her…until a copycat killer begins acting out a real-life sequel.  Now, as history repeats itself, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers (Cox), deputy Dewey (Arquette) and other Scream survivors find themselves trapped in a terrifyingly clever plotline where no one is safe – or beyond suspicion.

Scream 3 Synopsis:  While Sidney Prescott (Campbell) lives in safely guarded seclusion, bodies begin dropping around the Hollywood set of Stab 3, the latest movie based on the gruesome Woodsboro killings.  The escalating terror finally brings Sidney out of hiding, drawing her and the other survivors once again into an insidious game.  courtesy of Amazon

Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures: Season 3 (2009-10) on DVD.  Starring Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin and Nick Groff.  Created by Zak Bagans and Nick Groff.

The 3-disc set of season 3 of the paranormal television series is more than just the 10 episodes listed.  It includes four episodes from season two and one bonus Valentine’s Day episode.

Synopsis:  Are you ready for the lockdown?  The Ghost Adventures crew is back to investigate the scariest, most notorious, haunted places in the world.  The trio will interview eyewitnesses and historians at each location, arming themselves with the stories of the ghosts they will later provoke and confront during their dusk-to-dawn lockdowns.  (Note: They don’t always come out unscathed!)  Then they’ll review and analyze their findings with some the most respected experts and specialists in the paranormal field.  courtesy of Travel Channel

10 Episodes:  Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Pennhurst State School and Hospital, Poveglia Island, Ohio Reformatory, Remington Arms Munitions Factory, Washoe Club and Chollar Mine, Linda Vista Hospital, Execution Rocks, Prospect Place, and Clovis Wolfe Manor.
