9.9.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

X marks the spot, the X-Men spot.  Today’s Friday DVD/Blu-ray release of X-Men: First Class is first-class all the way.

X-Men: First Class (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray + Digital Copy.  Starring James McAvoy (The Conspirator), Michael Fassbender (A Dangerous Method), Kevin Bacon (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), Rose Byrne (Insidious), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), January Jones (Unknown) and Nicholas Hoult (Clash of the Titans).  Screenplay by Ashley Miller (Thor), Zack Stentz (TV’s Fringe), Jane Goldman (The Debt) and Matthew Vaughn.  Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass).

The fifth X-Men film, and second spin-off prequel (X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the first), successfully rebooted the franchise, critically and financially.  And finished business for Matthew Vaughn.  The director, who worked with writers Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes; also produced X-Men: First Class) and Zak Penn (TV’s Alphas) on the script and storyboard to X3, walked away from the third film with regret.  When the original X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer was forced to drop out as First Class‘s director due to Jack the Giant Killer (he remained a producer), Vaughn was offered the director’s chair.  He settled into it and breathed new life into the series.  With a rewritten script set in the 60’s during the Cuban missile crisis, the movie stands on its own two feet and reinvigorates the story with the friendship of Charles and Erik, and the history of the characters.  In the US and Canada, the domestic box office of $146.312 million was close to reaching the $160 million film budget but the foreign box office topped the budget, launching the worldwide gross to $352.52 million.  The X-Men: First Class DVD and Blu-ray includes featurettes and delete scenes.

Synopsis:  Before Charles Xavier (McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Fassbender) took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.  Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.  In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.  courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox
