9.13(and 16).2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

How coincidental that as we’re cruising to the Fall 2011 television season, a boatload of DVDs sails our way.  This week’s DVD/Blu-ray releases are full of seasons, a prequel to one of 2012’s most anticipated movies and two trilogies that make a Blu-ray saga.

Camelot: The Complete First Season (2011) on Blu-ray and DVD.  Starring Joseph Fiennes (TV’s FlashForward), Claire Forlani (TV’s NCIS: Los Angeles), Eva Green (Womb), Jamie Campbell Bower (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I & II), Tamsin Egerton (St. Trinian’s), Peter Mooney (Summer’s Blood) and Philip Winchester (TV’s Fringe).  Created by Chris Chibnall (TV’s Torchwood) and Michael Hirst (TV’s The Tudors).

The Starz original series Camelot weaved the legend of Arthur with contemporary themes but even with Merlin’s magic, the fantasy drama was cancelled after just one season due (supposedly) to production issues.  GK-TV’s (the television division of GK Films) first production was filmed in Ireland with post-production completed in Canada.  The $7 million per episode Camelot was overshadowed by the other fantasy drama of the summer, George R.R. Martin‘s Game of Thrones on HBO.  The 3-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets include featurettes, and a Blu-ray exclusive.

Season 1 Synopsis:  In the wake of King Uther’s (Sebastian Koch) sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain.  When the sorcerer Merlin (Fiennes) has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur (Campbell Bower), Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner.  But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan (Green) will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control.  These are dark times indeed for the new king, with Guinevere (Egerton) being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world.  Faced with profound moral decisions, and the challenge of uniting a kingdom broken by war and steeped in deception, Arthur will be tested beyond imagination.  courtesy of Starz

10 Episodes:  Homecoming, The Sword and the Crown, Guinevere, Lady of the Lake, Justice, Three Journeys, The Long Night, Igraine, The Battle of Bardon Pass, and Reckoning.

Ghost Hunters: Season 6 – Part I (2010) on Blu-ray and DVD.  Starring Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango.

The first part of season six of SyFy’s Ghost Hunters celebrates its 100th episode at Alcatraz, the former federal prison that housed Robert Stroud, aka The Birdman of Alcatraz, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and James “Whitey” Bulger.  The TAPS crew traveled around the US, and investigated two properties in our own neighborhood, the Orleans Inn in Cape Cod (“Inn of the Dead”) and a house in Plymouth (“Ghosts in the Attic”).  The 3-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets include deleted scenes.  (Part II will be released on October 11th, 2011)

Season 6 – Part 1 Synopsis:  Celebrate a milestone as America’s favorite paranormal investigators, the Ghost Hunters, kick off their triumphant sixth season with their live 100th episode.  For this epic investigation, Jason, Grant and the rest of The Atlantic Paranormal Society take on their biggest case yet: Alcatraz, the former military prison known worldwide for the countless claims of paranormal activity witnessed within its walls.  Other spine-tingling investigations this season feature some of the team’s most thrilling locales, including cases at the famous Philadelphia Zoo, the historic Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown and the home of abolitionist and author Harriet Beecher Stowe.  Prepare to be scared with some of the most unforgettable episodes of the series.  courtesy of Amazon

12 Episodes:  Alcatraz, Fort Ticonderoga, Shamrock Spirits, Phantoms of Jersey, Touched by Evil, Haunted Reform School, Ghosts in the Attic, Inn of the Dead, Spirits of the Night, Norwich State, Haunted Hotel, and America’s First Zoo.

Sanctuary: The Complete Third Season (2010-11) on Blu-ray and DVD.  Starring Amanda Tapping (TV’s Stargate: Atlantis), Robin Dunne (TV’s Beyond Sherwood Forest), Christopher Heyerdahl (TV’s Caprica), Ryan Robbins (Apollo 18) and Agam Darshi (2012).  Created by Damian Kindler (TV’s Stargate SG-1).

Sanctuary, one of the last of the surviving original scripted television shows on SyFy (Alphas, Haven, Warehouse 13 and the winter premiere of Neverland are the only other shows), concluded the season two cliffhanger of “Kali Part: I & II” and started a 20 episode season, a first in the series’ history, with season three.  The additional eight episodes allowed the producers and writers to include story arcs that would not fit in a 12 episode season like one and two.  During the season, there were a number of recurring and guest stars such as Jonathon Young as Nikolas Tesla, Ian Tracey as Adama Worth and Caprica‘s Polly Walker.  The 6-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets include bloopers, commentaries and featurettes.  The fourth season of Sanctuary premieres Friday, October 7th at 10/9c.

Synopsis:  The beautiful, enigmatic and always surprising Dr. Helen Magnus (Tapping) is a brilliant scientist who holds the secrets of a clandestine population, a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans.  Along with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Dunne), quirky tech wiz Henry (Robbins), professional con artist Kate Freelander (Darshi), and the mysterious and unpredictable John Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl), Magnus seeks to protect this threatened phenomena as well as unlock the mysteries behind their existence.  courtesy of SyFy

DeKnight (TV’s Angel, Smallville, Dollhouse).

The prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena featured everyone but the gladiator himself, Spartacus.  What was supposed to be a flashback of John Hannah’s Batiatus in episode five of season two for Blood and Sand turned into a six episode mini-series after news of actor Andy Whitfield’s diagnosis of non-hodgkin lymphoma.  Whitfield, who was declared cancer-free and readying himself for season two, died on Sunday, September 11th, 18 months after his diagnosis due to a recurrence of the cancer…may he R.I.P.

The 2-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets include alternate endings, bloopers, extended scenes, featurettes, and Blu-ray exclusives of a 3D battle sequence, commentaries and extended episodes.

Season six of Supernatural started off with the return of Sam from Hell and then the return of Dean from a normal life with Lisa and Ben.  It also started with Castiel as friend but ended with him as foe when he became the new God.  Though creator Eric Kripke designed the series to end with season five, the Winchester brothers continue to hunt and protect into season seven, premiering Friday, September 23rd at 9/8c.  The 4-disc Blu-ray and 6-disc DVD sets include commentaries, featurettes, an easter egg, a gag reel, takes and outtakes, two Supernatural: The Anime Series episodes, and Blu-ray exclusives of a guide and trivia track.

Season 6 Synopsis:  Sam (Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles) finally closed in on their dark destiny with the help of their friends, father-figure Bobby (Beaver) and fallen angel Castiel (Collins), managing to avert the Apocalypse.  But the victory came at terrible cost: Sam sacrificed himself, to be imprisoned in Hell alongside Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino).  Devastated, Dean retired to civilian life-and was shocked when, a year later, a mysteriously resurrected Sam appeared at his door.  Back in the hunt, the brothers faced increasingly strange, deadly creatures, ultimately fighting their way to the original monster, the Mother Of All.  And Dean discovered the shocking, dangerous truth about Sam: he’d returned from Hell, but without his soul, leaving him calculating and untrustworthy.  In a risky move, Dean restored Sam’s soul, but at great cost.  Sam was flooded with horrific memories of Hell, memories that threatened to overtake him, even kill him.  Meanwhile, Civil War in Heaven raged on.  Castiel, determined not to lose, made the reckless choice to open a door to Purgatory, repository for all monster souls.  His gambit: harness the power of those souls by absorbing them.  Ignoring Sam and Dean’s warnings, Castiel made a deal with the King of Hell to find that door.  Now, despite Sam and Dean’s efforts to stop him, Castiel has succeeded in his plan.  His power is God-like, and Sam and Dean have no idea how to stop him.  But even Castiel doesn’t truly understand the magnitude of what’s inside him – or how dangerous he really is.  courtesy of The CW
