9.30.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

It’s a Friday DVD/Blu-ray release to end the month of September and possibly the last of the Transformers series.  The second highest grossing movie of 2011 (so far) beat the odds to become one of the surprise hits of the summer.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) on DVD and 2-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy.  Starring Shia LeBeouf (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Josh Duhamel (Life as We Know It), Tyrese Gibson (Fast Five), John Turturro (Cars 2), Patrick Dempsey (TV’s Grey’s Anatomy) and Rosie Huntington-Whitely.  Written by Ehren Kruger (Blood & Chocolate).  Produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Red) and Steven Spielberg (Real Steel, TV’s Terra Nova).  Directed by Michael Bay (The Island).

The third installment of the live-action trilogy, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, may be the final of the series, at least for director Michael Bay and actor Shia LeBeouf, but it went out strong, real strong.  Despite mixed reviews (positives for special effects and 3D, negative for the acting and script), a major casting change (model Rosie Huntington-Whitely in, actress Megan Fox out), two on-set accidents, and having to follow in the footsteps of the critically panned Revenge of the Fallen, the second sequel opened to $97.852 million in its first weekend in the US and Canada.  Dark of the Moon continued to attract audiences even in its 13th weekend (September 16th-22nd) as the film’s final week numbers spiked 169% to gross $638,760.  The worldwide gross totaled $1.118 billion, $351.962 million domestically and $766.67 million internationally, topping 2007’s Transformers ($709.709 million) and 2009’s first sequel ($836.303 million), and rocketing it to #5 on the highest worldwide grossing movie chart.  The $1 billion+ covered the $195 million production budget ($30 million of it to 3D though less than half of the film was shot in 3D) and the additional $75 million for promotional and marketing costs.  Unlike the previous two movies, Dark of the Moon was based on Alan Dean Foster’s prequel novel, Transformers: Ghosts of Yesterday, as opposed to just the writers’ imaginations.  It was also inspired by the beloved 80’s cartoon The TransformersThe script tried to move away from what didn’t work in Revenge though Bay blames the Writers Guild of America strike of 2007-2008 for that script’s issues.  Transformers: Dark of the Moon is what it is: Michael Bay and special effects plus 3D which equals an entertaining action summer blockbuster.  But will it be the last of the Autobots, Decepticons and Sam Witwicky?

Synopsis:  A mysterious event from Earth’s past threatens to ignite a war to Earth so big that the Transformers alone will not be able to save the planet.  Sam Witwicky (LeBeouf) and the Autobots must fight against the darkness to defend our world from the Decepticons all-consuming evil.
