The Walking Are Living

October is Dead month, as in AMC’s The Walking Dead.  The countdown to the second season began on Sunday, December 5th, 2010, the day of the sixth and final episode of season one, and now we’re two weeks away from the premiere of season two.  But before we turn on the tv and sit on the couch, zombies will be invading the Web and New York Comic Con 2011.

Everyone watching the first episode of The Walking Dead remembers deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakening from a medically induced coma and encountering one of his first zombies, Bicycle Girl, a starving, legless dead who is left for dead.  Grimes walks away from her, only to return to shoot her in the head as he felt “…sorry this happened to [her].”  Lucky for us, AMC is launching six-Webisodes on Monday, October 3rd at 2pm EST that focuses on the back story of Hannah, a.k.a. Bicycle Girl.  The prequel series, written by John Esposito and co-executive produced by Greg Nicotero, will tell of Hannah’s (played by Lilli Birdsell in the Web series and Melissa Cowan on the show) life pre-zombie apocalypse, her and her family’s attempt at survival against the growing population of zombies and eventually, her transformation into a walking then crawling dead.  The 90-minute premiere of season two of The Walking Dead bows Sunday, October 16th at 9/8c on AMC, with six one-hour episodes airing in the following weeks.  The remaining six episodes of the 13-episode season begins Sunday, February 12th, 2012.

Robert Kirkman is one busy man, and that is putting it lightly.  The comic book writer (Haunt, Invincible and Marvel Zombies), Image Comics partner, and The Walking Dead series writer and executive producer continues his love of writing with The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor.  With novelist Jay Bonansinga, the duo are writing a TWD book trilogy with Rise of the Governor being the first (it was released on September 27th).  Kirkman and Bonansinga are offering a pre-New York Comic Con treat with a signing of the 320-page hardcover at Barnes & Noble in Union Square on Wednesday, October 12th at 7:00pm (see details here).

Synopsis of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor –  In The Walking Dead universe, there is no greater villain than The Governor.  The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury has his own sick sense of justice; whether it’s forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople’s amusement, or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him.  The Governor was voted “Villain of the Year” by Wizard Magazine the year he debuted, and his story arc was the most controversial arc in the history of The Walking Dead comic book series.  Now, for the first time, fans of The Walking Dead will discover how The Governor became the man he is, and what drove him to such extremes.  courtesy of St. Martin’s Press/Thomas Dunne Books

Last October, only one panel/screening was this close to causing a riot, with fans looking like a horde of flesh-starved zombies; first, there was queuing and then there was the knocking down of stanchions and running into the Javits Center‘s IGN theater (trust me, I was there).  Kirkman, executive producer Gale Ann Hurd (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Frank Darabont (The Green Mile) and the cast of The Walking Dead, including Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden, Steven Yuen and Norman Reedus, presented exclusive season one footage, answered questions and had an impromptu signing on stage.  This October, however, is very different.  Kirkman and the show’s producers and cast (unknown at time of publication) will all be attending minus one: Darabont.  The former director & executive producer was fired as showrunner and replaced by executive producer Glen Mazzara (TV’s The Shield) at the beginning of production of season two.  The firing was a shock to fans and even the crew working on the show.  Saturday, October 15th at 5:15p in the IGN Theater should be one of the most thrilling hours at NYCC and we’re just dying to see it*.

*The Fright Channel crew will be hitting all four days of New York Comic Con from Thursday, October 13th to Sunday, October 16th, so follow us @FrightChannel to stay tuned for our exclusive coverage.
