10.4.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases will have you screaming for more…more zombies, that is.  And that is what you’ll get all month long with Webisodes and a season two premiere.

Scream 4 (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy.  Starring David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudsen, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton and Nico Tortorella.  Written by Kevin Williamson.  Directed by Wes Craven.

Eleven years after the end of a genre-redefining trilogy, a reunion of cast and crew was written.  The kids are now the adults with new victims, I mean kids, the target of Ghostface.  Unfortunately, Scream 4 was unable to spark the magic of the original Scream and its Drew Barrymore opening.  The 1996 film was the highest grossing movie of the series at $173.046 million, followed by Scream 2 (1997) at $172.363 million and Scream 3 (2000) at $161.834 million.  The $40 million budgeted Scream 4 debuted at #2 (the animated birds of Rio were #1) with $18.692 million and ended its 11 weekend run with a worldwide box office total of $97.037 million.  Guess the kids of the ’90s were ready to move on and away from screaming.

The single-disc DVD and 2-disc Blu-ray +DVD includes an alternate opening and ending, commentary, featurette, deleted scenes and a gag reel.

Synopsis:  Sidney Prescott (Campbell), the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour.  There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (Arquette) and Gale (Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (McDonnell).  Unfortunately, Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.  courtesy of Dimension films

The Walking Dead: Season One (2010) on DVD, Blu-ray, 3-Disc Special Edition DVD and 3-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray.  Starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeffrey DeMunn, Laurie Holden, Norman Reedus, IronE Singleton and Steven Yuen.  Written by Frank Darabont, Robert Kirkman and Glenn Mazzara.  Produced by Frank Darabont, Gale Anne Hurd and Robert Kirkman.

For a full television season, six episodes in six weeks is just not enough for audiences, especially for fans of The Walking Dead.  After the viewership numbers (5.3 million for the premiere and 6 million for the finale) of season one, neither was it for AMC.  Season two sees an additional seven episodes for a total of 13 of the award-nominated and winning dramatic horror and a few major changes, including showrunner Frank Darabont to Glen Mazzara.  The first season of the show and several of its actors were nominated at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Portal Awards, Saturn Awards and Writers Guild of America Awards, and won an Emmy for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Miniseries, Movie or a Special and named as an American Film Institute television program of the year.  The comic book (from Charlie Adlard, Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Cliff Rathburn) turned television show returns with season two on Sunday, October 16th 9/8c.

The single-disc DVD and Blu-ray includes featurettes and additional footage.  The 3-disc DVD and Blu-ray includes audio commentary for all six episodes, featurettes, the pilot episode “Days Gone By” in black-and-white, additional footage, and a cryptozoic trading card.

Season One Episodes:  Days Gone Bye, Guts, Tell It to the Frogs, Vatos, Wildfire and TS-19.

Season One Synopsis:  AMC’s The Walking Dead captures the ongoing human drama following a zombie apocalypse.  The series follows a group of survivors, led by deputy Rick Grimes (Lincoln), who are traveling in search of a safe and secure home.  However, instead of the zombies, it is the living who remain that truly become the walking dead.  At the end of season one, the characters were in the midst of a high-intensity struggle to survive, fleeing the CDC as it burst into flames.  courtesy of AMC
