Singing and Dancing to American Horror Story

The Fall 2011 television season started off with more hits than misses (NBC‘s Playboy Club is the only new show to be cancelled thus far) but nothing is as frightening as FX’s American Horror Story.  If the show’s trailers are too creepy, we suggest changing the channel to Glee.

American Horror Story premieres Wednesday, October 5th at 10/9c on FX.  Starring Dylan McDermott (TV’s The Practice), Connie Britton (TV’s Friday Night Lights), Taissa Farmiga (Higher Ground), Jessica Lange (TV’s Grey Gardens), Alexandra Breckenridge (TV’s True Blood), Jamie Brewer, Frances Conroy (TV’s Six Feet Under), Denis O’Hare (TV’s True Blood), Evan Peters (Kick-Ass), Zachary Quinto (TV’s Heroes) and Teddy Sears (TV’s Torchwood).  Created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy (TV’s Glee and Nip/Tuck).  Executive Produced by Dante Di Loreto (TV’s Glee and Temple Grandin).  Produced by Tim Minear (TV’s Angel, Dollhouse and Firefly), Jessica Sharzer (Speak), Jennifer Salt (TV’s Nip/Tuck) and James Wong (Final Destination 3, TV’s The X-Files).

The horror genre is straightforward, except when it’s not.  And it’s not in American Horror Story because of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.  The producing and writing duo of the award-winning Glee, the high school musical comedy-drama, are the very last to be thought of in creating a “psychosexual thriller” but don’t forget that Murphy also created Nip/Tuck (also on FX) and Falchuk was a series writer on the television show.  Though the drama begins with the relationship and the horrors of infidelity between a husband and wife, the real horror is about the Harmons’ new house and the new people in their life.  Falchuk and Murphy were inspired by crimes, Jessica Lange in A Streetcar Named Desire, the past meeting the present, Dark Shadows of the ’60s and The Night Stalker of the ’70s, and a love of Halloween (spawning a two-part AHS Halloween special).  The two clearly are having a much different time with American Horror Story than they are with Glee; Murphy even stated that he’s “most proud” of this show.

Synopsis:  American Horror Story revolves around the Harmons, a family of three who moved from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish.  The all-star cast features Dylan McDermott as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton as “Vivien Harmon,” Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as “Violet,” the Harmon’s teenage daughter; Jessica Lange in her first-ever regular series TV role as “Constance,” the Harmon’s neighbor; Evan Peters plays “Tate Langdon,” one of Ben’s patients; and Denis O’Hare as “Larry Harvey.”  Guest stars for the series include Frances Conroy as the Harmon’s housekeeper; Alexandra Breckenridge as the Harmon’s housekeeper; and Jamie Brewer as Constance’s daughter.  courtesy of FX
