11.4-6.2011: Weekend Box Office – The $

The end of Daylight Savings Time was not the only déjà vu of the weekend as Puss in Boots experienced the #1 spot for the second consecutive week, ruining a heist and a high.  The Shrek prequel/spin-off was on the verge of doubling its opening weekend domestic gross with $33.054 million (last weekend’s premiere gross equaled $34.077 million).  New comedies, Tower Heist and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, broke in at #2 and #3 with $24.025 million and $12.954 million, respectively.  Paranormal Activity 3 and In Time rounded out the top five.

Weekend three for Paranormal Activity 3 was spooky, but just a little less spooky than it was for Halloween.  The second sequel of the same name (minus the 3) missed #3, falling two spots from #2 to #4.  Grossing $8.333 million, the film fell 54.1% which was the highest negative % change of the weekend’s top ten (Puss in Boots was only -3.0%).  The $5 million horror movie has grossed $95.116 million domestically and $77.1 million internationally.

Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried’s In Time is losing time in the top ten of the weekend box office.  Dropping from #3 to #5 in only its second week, the film with a youthful bent added five theaters to screen its sci-fi action.  But five just isn’t enough, taking in $7.481 million domestically.  It is faring 61% better at the foreign box office with a current total gross of $37.6 million, increasing its worldwide gross to $61.59 million.

Real Steel is fighting strong at the #7 spot from last weekend’s #6.  Five weekend rounds in, the other sci-fi action flick of the weekend earned $3.436 million.  This hit of the fall season is at a worldwide gross of $205.979 million from $78.779 million domestic and $127.2 million international.

Check out ‘What To Watch – Theater Edition’ this Friday for the week’s new movie releases…it’s fantasy Friday on 11/11/11.
