11.15.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

For three roommates, Being Human is harder than it looks.  And being a successful remake of a successful British series is harder than it looks but the the US & Canada version of Being Human is doing it with a spin of its own.

Being Human: The Complete First Season (2011) on Four-Disc DVD and Blu-ray.  Starring Sam Witwer (TV’s Smallville), Meaghan Rath (TV movie Cyberbully), Sam Huntington (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night) and Mark Pellegrino (TV’s Lost).  Created by Toby Whithouse (TV’s Doctor Who).  Developed by Jeremy Carver (TV’s Supernatural) and Anna Fricke (TV’s Men in Trees).

The adaptation of the award-winning BBC series Being Human into the SyFy series Being Human was that and more of a reimagining.  The writing and producing team of Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke developed the North American series by using elements from the British series like similar, but not the same, characters, and creating and adding new characters for the show.  Though the arc of the first season followed the original, both new arcs and stories were also written to work for the 13 episode season as the British version was only six episodes.  A successful reimagining, Being Human averaged 1.8 million viewers per new episode with the highest female viewership for a SyFy series.  It was also the highest rated scripted show of the winter season for the network in six years (since the reimagined Battlestar Galactica).  The second season of Being Human premieres Monday, January 16th at 9/8c on SyFy.

The four-disc DVD and Blu-ray set includes featurettes and interviews.

Being Human Synopsis:  Three 20-something roommates, Sally (Rath), a ghost, Aidan (Witwer), a vampire, and Josh (Huntington), a werewolf, are struggling to keep their dark secrets from the world, while also helping each other navigate the complexities of living double lives.
