11.22.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

What to watch for Thanksgiving besides the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and a Bones and NCIS marathon?  A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and of course, two former summer movies…one a hit, the other not-so-much.  Need more to keep you busy and away from doing the dishes, or to cure the tryptophan hangover?  The Doctor is in.

Conan the Barbarian (2011 / R / 112 mins) on DVD, Blu-ray, 3-Disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD.  Starring Jason Momoa (TV’s Game of Thrones), Rachel Nichols (TV’s Criminal Minds), Stephen Lang (TV’s Terra Nova), Rose McGowan (TV’s Nip/Tuck), Saïd Taghmaoui (TV’s Lost), Leo Howard (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Bob Sapp (Blood and Bone) and Ron Perlman (TV’s Sons of Anarchy).  Written by Thomas Dean Donnelly (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night), Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara) and Sean Hood (Halloween: Resurrection).  Directed by Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th [2009]).

Jason Momoa’s Conan is no Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan.  The re-interpretation of Conan the Barbarian may be of the same name as John Milius’ original 1982 film but that is where the similarities end.  The $90 million movie suffered set back after set back, including Brett Ratner leaving the director’s chair and a two-year delay in filming.  In its premiere weekend, Conan the Barbarian was ranked #4 behind the new Spy Kids sequel, All the Time in the World, and successful summer hits, The Help and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  It grossed $10.021 million in those three days and just $48.795 million worldwide in a short seven weekends at the box office.  Even Milius’ Conan grossed a worldwide total of $68.851 million and that was in 1982.

Synopsis:  A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan (Momoa) realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.
