11.29.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

It’s the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving and time to begin our holiday shopping.  The two DVD & Blu-ray sets released this week might just be the perfect start for the sci-fi fan in your life, or an early gift for yourself.

Smallville: The Complete Tenth Season (2010-11) on 6-Disc DVD and 4-Disc Blu-ray.  Starring Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Cassidy Freeman, Justin Hartley, Allison Mack, Aaron Ashmore, Callum Blue, John Glover, Alessandro Juliani, Annette O’Toole, Michael Rosenbaum, John Schneider, Laura Vandervoort and Terence Stamp.  Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

The tenth and final season of Smallville marked the end of both the longest-running comic book-based television series and the longest-running science fiction television series in North America.  It also closed the chapter on Smallville’s Clark Kent and opened a new chapter for Metropolis’s Clark Kent/Superman; the final scene showed what Smallville viewers have been waiting for since season one.  The 22 episodes not only introduced Darkseid, Cat Grant, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle but re-introduced past characters Jonathan and Martha Kent, Lionel Luthor, Kara/Supergirl, Brainiac, Arthur Curry/Aquaman and of course, Lex Luthor in order for Clark to complete his training and achieve his destiny as a superhero.  Smallville received 1.99 million to 3.19 million viewers over the course of the season, with 3.02 million tuning into the two-part finale.  The DVD and Blu-ray set includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, a featurette and a music video.

Season 10 Episodes:  Lazarus, Shield, Supergirl, Homecoming, Isis, Harvest, Ambush, Abandoned, Patriot, Luthor, Icarus, Collateral, Beacon, Masquerade, Fortune, Scion, Kent, Booster, Dominion, Prophecy, and Finale

Season 10 Synopsis:  The series that redefines the origins of the world’s greatest hero reaches its powerful conclusion with more revelations, more fascinating characters from DC Comics lore and a mind-blowing, spirit-lifting finale that is everything fans could want.  Superheroes emerge from the shadows, only to be driven underground by a public that labels them vigilantes.  At the same time, otherworld forces of darkness gather, presenting Clark Kent (Welling) with the greatest challenge of his young life.  The world he calls home and the people he loves – including Lois Lane (Durance), who now shares his secret and his life – need a champion.  They shall have one.  Don’t miss all the hopes, heartaches and heroics of a final season to remember.  They will lift you up, up and away.  courtesy of Amazon

Torchwood Miracle Day (2011) on 4-Disc Blu-ray.  Starring John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Kai Owen, Lauren Ambrose, Alexa Havins, Mekhi Phifer, Tom Price, Bill Pullman and Arlene Tur.  Created by Russell T. Davies.

Death is not an option.  Torchwood: Miracle Day, the fourth in the series, followed season six of The Doctor (Torchwood is a spin-off of Doctor Who) by crossing the pond.  Shot primarily in Los Angeles (additional shooting was in Wales, the setting for the first three series), Miracle Day was co-produced by BBC and Starz in mini-series format rather than the usual episodic format, which it will continue to do in the future.  The 10-episode series was written by seven writers, including Russell T. Davies and Jane Espenson, and included the 10-episode companion web series Torchwood: Web of Lies.

Season 4/Miracle Day Episodes:  The New World, Rendition, Dead of Night, Escape to LA, The Categories of Life, The Middle Men, Immortal Sins, End of the Road, The Gathering, and The Blood Line

Season 4/Miracle Day Synopsis:  One day, nobody dies.  All across the world, nobody dies.  And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging – they get hurt and sick – but they never die.  The result: a population boom, overnight.  With all the extra people, resources are finite.  It’s said that in four month’s time, the human race will cease to be viable.  But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it.  It’s a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson (Barrowman) investigates a global conspiracy.  The answers lie within an old, secret British institute.  As Rex keeps asking “What is Torchwood?”, he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.
