Simply, Bill Mantlo

Written by Shaun Daniels and Edited by Sharon Wong

On Thanksgiving, I journeyed to Cape Cod on my annual T-Day pilgrimage, which is neither the most exciting nor scenic.  However, the drive was eased by my favorite podcast, 11 O’Clock Comics.  In the latest episode (#188), the gang of Vince, Chris, David and Jason were talking about writer Bill Mantlo.  Who might you ask is Bill Mantlo?  Mantlo is a Bronze Age comic creator who was the proverbial go-to man when it came to writing fill-ins.  Responsible for the creation of Cloak & Dagger, he breathed life into two licensed toy properties, Rom and The Micronauts.  The two titles were blank canvases that Mantlo worked his magic on, creating both backstories and rich worlds.  He was also a regular writer for The Incredible Hulk, Alpha Flight and Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spiderman.

The reason for 11 O’Clock Comics’ podcast on Bill Manto is that he needs our help.  In July of 1992, Bill was rollerblading and struck by a car in a hit-and-run accident.  The driver was never identified or  apprehended.  Bill, left with irreparable brain damage, currently lives in a healthcare facility and due to healthcare regulations and disability, all of his assets were liquidated to meet medicare requirements.  With his condition, Bill requires full-time medical care which comes at a high cost.  What can you do to help?  Simply buy the book Mantlo: A Life in Comics by David Yurkovich (and Michael Mantlo, Bill’s brother and caregiver) as all proceeds will help in paying for Bill’s care.  The book is even downloadable at WOWIO for a mere $3.50.  It’s not often we can give back to someone who has given us so much but here is the chance to do that, give back to someone who could really use it.
