12.13.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

(A belated post…we blame the holiday crack)

We’ll pass on blood and bananas but for this week’s DVD/Blu-ray releases, it’s a must for one vampire and one ape.  Let’s just say it’s bad news for us humans as the former is running towards us and the latter is running away from us.  Please pass the popcorn…

Fright Night (2011 / R / 101 mins) on 1-Disc DVD, 2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD Combo & 3-Disc Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Combo.  Starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant.  Story by Tom Holland.  Written by Marti Noxon.  Directed by Craig Gillespie.

Fright Night was frightful and funny in the remake of the 1985 film of the same name.  The horror comedy received positive reviews but was unable to achieve the fever of a particular brood of sparkling vampires.  In a total of 12 weekends, the $30 million movie premiered at #6, and grossed $18.302 million domestically and $18.8 million internationally, only $7 million in the black.

The DVD includes bloopers, Kid Cudi’s “No One Believes Me” music video and the feature, Squid Man.  The Blu-ray + DVD and Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy sets include five deleted & extended scenes, bloopers, a Peter Vincent feature, a “How To Make A Funny Vampire Movie” guide, Kid Cudi’s “No One Believes Me” music video and the feature, Squid Man.

Synopsis:  Meet the sexy new neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Farrell).  He’s dangerously charming – and utterly lethal.  That’s because he just happens to be a vampire, and out for blood…buckets of it.  After high school senior Charley Brewster (Yelchin) makes the connection between Jerry’s suspicious activity and a steadily rising body count, he vows to end the reign of terror next door.  But he can’t do it alone.  His only hope is Las Vegas magician/vampireslayer Peter Vincent (Tennant).  Together, this unlikely duo set out to end Jerry’s evil rampage.  But Jerry is a ruthless, relentless killer, and he’s not going down without a fight.  courtesy of Dreamworks

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011 / PG-13 / 120 mins) on 1-Disc DVD & 2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Combo.  Starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton and Andy Serkis.  Written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.  Directed by Rupert Wyatt.

The seventh film of the Planet of the Apes franchise was both a reboot for the series and an original story.  Sci-fi-action-drama Rise of the Planet of the Apes started anew, including using digital apes for the first time as opposed to actors in make-up, but didn’t forget the past.  The movie is similar to Conquest of the Planet of the Apes of 1972 and continues with the heart of the franchise, which lead to its summer success.  At $93 million, the formerly titled Rise of the Apes stayed in theaters for 17 weekends and grossed $480.925 million worldwide, $304.326 million of it internationally.

The DVD includes deleted scenes, (2) featurettes and trailers.  The Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy set includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, (8) featurettes, a gallery and trailers.

Synopsis:  Set in present day San Francisco, man’s own experiments with genetic engineering leads to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.
